Can parents on a visa or green card claim the $1,000 Trump Account deposit?

Yes, in most cases. The citizenship rule applies to your child, not to you.

Rules checked November 2, 2026

Yes, in most cases. The US citizenship rule for the $1,000 applies to your child. The Form 4547 instructions do not set a citizenship or immigration requirement for the parent, and a parent who cannot get a Social Security number can enter an ITIN instead.

What your child needs

  • Born from January 1, 2025 through December 31, 2028
  • A US citizen
  • A valid Social Security number, issued before you make the election
  • No earlier request for the $1,000 has been processed

What you need as the parent

You must expect your child to be your qualifying child for that tax year. That generally means, among other tests, that your child lives with you for more than half the year. You also enter your own identifying number on Form 4547.

Green card holderYour Social Security number
On a visa, with a Social Security numberYour Social Security number
Not eligible for a Social Security numberYour ITIN (Individual Taxpayer Identification Number)

Use your number exactly as it appears in your records. The IRS warns that an incorrect or missing number may stop your election from being processed.

Check my child

Is my US-born child a citizen?

Almost always, yes. In Trump v. Barbara, decided on June 30, 2026, the Supreme Court held that children born in the US to parents who are here temporarily or without legal status are citizens at birth. The narrow exceptions include children of foreign diplomats.

What if my child was not born in the US?

  • If your child is a US citizen with a Social Security number and meets the other rules, your child can qualify. Some children born abroad are citizens through a parent.
  • If your child is not a US citizen but has a valid Social Security number, your child can still have a Trump Account, but cannot get the $1,000.

What if the app cannot verify me?

The official pages we checked do not say how identity checks in the app work for ITIN holders. If you get stuck, you can send Form 4547 with your tax return or by mail, following the form instructions. The IRS FAQ also lists a Trump Accounts help line: 866-USA-4547.

If you have questions about your immigration status or how your information may be used, speak with an immigration attorney or accredited legal aid group before you file. This page is general information, not legal or tax advice.
